Safe Routes to School

PedNet is a nationally recognized expert in developing and implementing Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs, and in training schools, school districts, and communities to do the same.

Our work has been featured in NewsweekTime magazine and on the websites of the National Center for Safe Routes to School and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership.

SRTS Programs

Nationally, we have taken our best practices learned locally and brought them to other schools across the country. Our belief is that creating robust programs that immediately change the school and the community is what leads to a culture of support and sustainability.

For example, during the 2014-2015 school year, the Kansas Department of Transportation contracted with PedNet to create 15 Walking School Bus (WSB) programs across the state. However, in the end 17 WSB programs were created with 715 children registered.

What’s more, to date, 12 of the 17 schools have committed or located funding to continue to program after the grant has ended. This upholds our belief is that success brings about culture and sustainability.

School Travel Plans

With funding from Kansas Department of Health and Environment, we created Safer Walking and Bicycling maps for 8 schools in Kansas in 2015 and 7 schools in 2016. We also provided infrastructure and non-infrastructure recommendations to make the area around the school safer for all students.

“The Walking School Bus workshop PedNet brought to our school was an instrumental resource in launching our own WSB. Robert delivered everything I needed to know and gave me all the tools from brochure and form templates, to volunteer training content, to canvasing our neighborhood for the right route.” -Cristina McKenney

“We hired PedNet to help guide our steering committee, in partnership with our local school district, through a serpentine planning process to start a walking school bus program at one of our elementary schools. Robert’s attentiveness, accessibility, and depth of experience-based knowledge on the topic of Walking School Buses and active transit advocacy truly helped us every step of the way. The training and publicity materials PedNet provided are helping us to kick-start our program and save precious resources.” -Rebecca Nathanson, C-U Safe Routes to School Consultant, Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District
