Community Programs: Cycle Recycle

many many bikes!Cycle Recycle is a program in which used bikes are donated, repaired and then given away to those who need a bike.

The program was started in 2001 when Eduardo Crespi, director of The Latin Center, contacted PedNet asking if there was a way to get affordable bikes for low income people. The PedNet Coalition pulled together, repaired a donated bike, and delivered it to Arizbeth soon after. Through a translator, Arizbeth told PedNet that the bike would make it easier for her to get to work, do her shopping, and visit friends.

Since then Cycle Recycle has repaired and given away over 950 bikes to Columbia residents.

Who can participate?
There are two types of participants in the Cycle Recycle program. You can either:
  • Donate a bike
Bring any used bike to the Getabout Columbia office at 101 N 7th Street. You will be given a tax receipt for your donation.
  • Receive a bike
Come to a Cycle Recycle event and receive a good working bike at no cost.
What are the benefits?
Bikes that might otherwise end up in a landfill or rust away in a garage are turned into workable bikes for those who otherwise may not be able to afford one.

Bikes give people the freedom to actively travel around Columbia. Active Transportation improves people’s health, reduces traffic congestion, and decreases pollution. They also allow people who may not be able to afford other forms of transportation to seek employment more actively and hold down a job or attend school.
How can I get involved?
If you have a bike to donate, bring it to the Getabout Columbia Office any day between 9 and 4.  Contact us or call Robert at (573) 289-6479.
