Bicycling Classes: Confident City Cycling Course

Confident City Cycling is that class that teaches you everything you didn’t know you needed to know about bicycling.

Learn how to:

  • Perform basic repairs and maintenance
  • Fix a flat
  • Equip your bike for errands, commuting and travel
  • Improve your bike handling skills
  • Understand traffic laws pertaining to bicycles
  • Navigate Columbia’s roads and trails safely and legally by bike

The course is taught by a League of American Bicyclists certified instructor and includes a student manual.

There are four sections, and two ways to take the class!

    (Pre-requisites: CCC2 and CCC3)

Join us for one all-day fun-filled active Saturday class or take the four two-hour weeknight sessions at your leisure.

CCC 1: Get (your bike) ready to ride

Learn everything you ever wanted to know about bicycles including how to:

  • Choose the best bike for your needs
  • Make sure your bike fits you perfectly
  • Keep your bike well-maintained and running smoothly
  • Fix a flat
  • Perform basic brake maintenance
  • Clean and lubricate your chain
  • Make minor gear adjustments
  • Equip your bike for all-weather riding and carrying cargo
  • Make sure your helmet fits properly for maximum protection

Be prepared to get your hands dirty, learn a lot and have a great time.
You do not need to bring your bicycle as we will have teaching bikes available. You may bring your bicycle and helmet if you would like to work on your own equipment.

CCC2: Traffic laws and rules of the road

Gain the confidence to ride anywhere by learning to be a safe, legal and predictable cyclist in all conditions and situations. This class reviews traffic laws pertaining to bikes. Learn bicyclists’ rights and responsibilities, as well as proper lane position for maximum visibility, predictability and safety. In addition, students learn about the most common types of car-bike crashes and best the practices for avoiding them.

No bicycle is required for this 2 hour class.

CCC3: Bike Handling Skills

Knowing how to operate your bike smoothly and predictably is the best way to cycle safe. On a vacant parking lot, you will learn bike handling skills that will keep you riding safely and efficiently.
Skills include:

  • Smooth and efficient stops and starts
  • How and when to use your gears
  • Riding a straight line with one hand off the handle bars
  • Scanning over your shoulder and signaling turns
  • Quick turns
  • Hazard avoidance
  • Emergency stopping

A bicycle in good operating condition and a helmet are required for this class.

CCC4: Group Road Ride (Pre-requisites: CCC2 and CCC3)

Learn to ride safely for transportation and recreation on this LCI led group ride. Learn bike friendly routes and commuter secrets for getting around Columbia by bike for work, for errands, for fun.
This ride will:

  • Help you navigate Columbia’s roads and trails by bike
  • Show you the best routes to get to popular destinations by bike
  • Teach you popular bike commuter short-cuts
  • Help you safely and confidently navigate both simple and complex road intersections

A bicycle in good operating condition and a bicycle helmet are required for this class. You must complete CCC2 and CCC3 before taking this class.
