Educational Programs: Bicycle Mechanics College

Bicycle Mechanics College (BMC) is an 8-week course that will teach you everything you want to know about maintaining, repairing and re-building your bike. All BMC classes include student handouts with references to helpful online resources.

These 2 hour classes cost $25 per session or save money and secure your spot for all sessions by registering for the whole series at $150. Space is limited and pre-paid registration is required to secure a spot in the class. Invite a friend, a family member or a date!

The Bike Mechanics College is taught by League of American Bicyclists certified League Cycling Instructors (LCI) who are also experienced, professional bike mechanics. 

Week 1: Basic maintenance and repairs (Basic repairs, diagnosis, tools)

  • Basic schedule with weekly, monthly and annual maintenance and repairs
  • Tools and parts needed for home bike repair and maintenance

Week 2: Tires, rims and fixing flats

  • Types of tires, tubes and rims
  • Rim wear and damage
  • Seating a tire
  • Fixing flats: replacing tubes and repairing tubes
  • Types of tire pumps and inflators
Student handouts include:
  • Tire repair and replacement worksheet
  • Tire types and functions diagram
  • Related online resources


Week 3: Hubs, bearing and bottom brackets

  • What a hub is, how it works and how it wears
  • Bearings: hubs, freewheel, headset, bottom bracket, pedals
  • Maintain and repack hubs
  • Replace bearings: Disassemble and reassemble
Student handouts include:
  • Diagrams of bike hub systems
  • Related online resources


Week 4: Wheels and Truing

  • How wheels work and how they wear
  • Types of spoke patterns and ‘aero ‘ wheels
  • Using a truing stand and spoke wrenches
  • Replace a broken spoke

  • Wheel truing diagrams and tips
  • Related online resources


Week 5: Drive Train – cranks, chains, cogs, cassettes, chain rings

  • Torque as a concept
  • Freewheels, cassettes & cogs
  • Cranks and chain rings
  • Gear ratios
  • Use a chain tool and replace a ‘stretched’ chain

  • Drive train diagram
  • Gear ratio calculations

Week 6: Shifters and Derailleurs

  • What derailleurs do
  • Types of gearing set-ups
  • Derailleur housing runs & torque
  • How derailleurs work and how to adjust them

Week 7: Brakes

  • Brake cable runs
  • Types of brakes
  • Troubleshooting brake problems
  • Adjusting, maintaining and repairing brakes

  • Brake maintenance and troubleshooting

Week 8: Bike fit, ergonomics, control and speed

  • Getting the best bike fit
  • Choosing bike type, fit and style.
  • Bike adjustments for reach, leg extension and pedal stroke.
  • Alleviating common aches and pains with bike adjustments
  • Bike frame sizing
  • Please bring your bike for this class.
