How do I sign up as a volunteer WSB leader?
Volunteer WSB leaders are the heart and soul of the Walking School Bus program. We ask you to:
- Attend a 1-hour training session
- Agree to a criminal background check
- Be available between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. at least 2 days per week
We are currently recruiting volunteers for the Spring 2012 Walking School Bus program: Monday, March 5 through Thursday May 3, 2012.
How it works
Two qualified leaders are usually assigned to share a route. Before the program starts, one of the leaders will call each family to confirm the child's participation in the program, let the family know the pick-up time and location, and answer any questions the family may have.
The two leaders will then work out a rotation for who will lead the walk on each day. If the designated leader is sick, the first substitute should be the other leader for the same route if available. It is important for the Walking School Bus leaders to be punctual and thoroughly reliable.
A packet of information will be provided to each leader describing program policies on children's behavior, cancellation due to bad weather, etc. and including games and activities to make the walk more fun for the kids.
The WSB leader will also be asked to keep attendance records and report to PedNet's Walking School Bus Coordinator once a week.
At the end of the program, all WSB leaders are invited to attend the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
