Newsroom: Commuter Spotlight

Lisa Wells

Lisa WellsLisa Wells began bike commuting when she developed a back injury and could not run to keep herself active. After only a few rides, she got hooked, and then began to see bike commuting in a whole new way. “I like the adventure and challenge, and using less gas in the car,” Wells stated. Now she actively commutes two to three days a week. As with most active commuters, Wells doesn’t see it as an all or nothing endeavor. Bad weather days, busy schedules, or late mornings call for creative thinking. “On occasion, when running, I might catch a ride with my husband for part of the way.”

Wells, her husband, and her two dogs, a golden retriever and a chocolate lab, all live near Midway. She works as a secretary at State Farm Insurance on South Providence, so her daily commute is about 10 miles each way. Wells handles bad weather with lots of layers and has invested in high visibility clothing and lights for darkness. Her favorite thing about commuting is the days when there is a tailwind! What’s her least favorite? “Waiting at red lights,” she joked.

Bicycle commuting is full of interesting experiences. Wells’ favorite happened one day after some heavy rains this past summer. “A man gave me a ride over the flooded section of Strawn Road,” she explained. “He put my bike in the back of his truck, drove across the road, dropped me off, then went on his way.”

Her active commuting has inspired those around her. To encourage others to give it a try she offers the following advice. “A good way to get started is to pack an extra set of clothing with you, ride your bike home, and ride back in the morning,” said Wells. “It takes a little planning ahead but once you get used to it, it becomes a habit and something you look forward to doing.”

Wells is a tri-athlete and member of Columbia Multisport Club. She also works part-time at Prange Intimates. Making active commuting a part of her day allows her to stay in shape and do other things in her free time. “I enjoy Sudoku, reading, and making bead jewelry,” said Wells. She also rides a motorcycle for leisure and commuting.
