Joe Montgomery

Joe Montgomery

Having been an avid biker since the 1970s, Joe Montgomery has made a huge effort to reduce his carbon footprint in the community.  He commutes to work by bike on a daily basis, except for days with poor weather.  Joe says that he enjoys “the physical challenge, the health benefits,” and “the Zen experience of bicycle riding.”

Married with two daughters, Joe is a registered nurse for the Division of Nephrology, Adult and Pediatrics at the University of Missouri Health Sciences Center.  Along with his wife, Barb, Joe has ridden across the state of Missouri several times and participated in the Bike Across Kansas (BAK), an annual cross-state bicycle tour of Kansas.

The best thing about riding for Joe is the exercise.  The four-mile commute to work he endures is not an issue.  He has learned to dress according to the temperature, but always makes sure he addresses safety first.  Joe also bikes back and forth to the gym and rides recreationally on the weekends.

Although he is not sure if his active commute has inspired anyone in particular, Joe notes that his co-workers have become extremely interested in learning about his cycling.  One of the benefits about riding a bike to work is that Joe does not have to pay a monthly parking fee.  If there is anything Joe would like people to do, he says, “Ride carefully and often.”
