Columbia Daily Tribune / Tribune Publishing Company

By Brianne Boysen

Columbia Daily TribuneFor over 100 years, the Columbia Daily Tribune has been a newspaper and printing service for the Columbia, Missouri area.  With over 210 employees, the company maintains a bike- and pedestrian-friendly facility and interest in healthful living for its employees.

The Tribune offers a company gym, including a basketball court, for its employees to use for exercise.  A weather-shielded bicycle rack adds accessibility to the building for those employees who do not drive.  In addition, the Tribune’s HR department has formed walking groups for employees to take short hikes together during break times.

Promoting bicycle-related events in the community is something the Tribune takes great pride in.  One of these events is the Mayor’s Bike/Walk/Wheel Week, which started in 2002.  BWWW is a weeklong series of events celebrating active transportation in Columbia.

“The Tribune was involved in the Mayor’s Bike/Walk/Wheel program from the outset.  We provided promotional ads and employee leadership for Bike/Walk/Wheel public events and encouraged employees to participate through our company newsletter,” said Marketing Manager Linda Hays.

The Tribune is also a site for the “Errand Bike” program.  The company has a bicycle that is used by reporters and other employees who make trips around town.

Spotlights in the newspaper also promote healthy living.  Every Sunday, the Tribune has a fitness feature in its Sunday Pulse section.  Articles in this section talk about fitness, energy, and health-related topics.

In the end, Hays says the Tribune’s goal is to help its readers make good decisions in their lives:

“The Tribune is an integral part of life in Columbia and many other mid-Missouri communities.  Our primary goal is to inform our readers about life here and to provide information with which the community at large and individual citizens can make good decisions for their lives.  Information about health – and about city and state programs that support health, recreation and safety – are a mainstay of our news and lifestyle coverage.”
