Empire Roller Rink
Gather the family and head to Empire Roller Rink for a night of active, healthy fun.
Empire Roller Rink owners Lisa and Willie Trent know that their business provides a safe, fun place for families to spend time together. They know that ERR has been a Columbia tradition for 70 years. They know that parents depend on skate session to help burn off some kid energy on cold winter nights. They also know that skating is one of the healthiest activities you can do!
The original Empire was built in 1938 and has always been owned and operated under the Trent Family. Willie built the new rink in 2000 and the people of all ages have been rolling around its floor ever since. The Trent’s are very proud of the rink and appreciate the opportunity to provide a healthy and fun activity to the families of Columbia.
Some of those activities include free skate lessons every Wednesday night from 6-6:30pm to teach beginner skating. More advanced skate lessons are also available. There are also several different skate sessions that will appeal to kids and adults of all ages.
It’s not all backward skates and hokey-pokey’s though. Empire Roller Rink also specializes in the "sports" side of roller skating such as Artistic, Roller Derby and Roller Hockey. The Competitive Artistic Roller Skating Team consists of 7 skaters who travel to competitions as far as Pennsylvania. Emma Trent, Lisa and Willie’s 13 year old daughter is a 2007 and 2008 National Champion.
Lisa also likes to point out the healthy aspects of skating. She states that according to medical research, roller skating and rollerblading rank in the top 3 activities that improve or maintain physical fitness and general well-being. Regular skating not only burns about 6 calories a minute, or 360 calories an hour, but also turns fat into muscle — a double benefit.
