Street Murals completed
The two designs for Columbia’s
Bike Boulevard street mural have been completed and can now be seen on the street intersections of Windsor and Melbourne and Ash and St. Joseph streets.
Earlier this summer, residents of the community and GetAbout Columbia chose two designs by Sandra Eccles of Canton as their favorites from six finalist pieces. The first design, on Windsor and Melbourne streets, resembles a compass with four blue points and a sun in the center. The four points represent the four seasons, four directions and the four elements: earth, wind, fire and air. The second shows four people holding hands representing a community around a green circle with gardens and locally grown foods.
Eccles said it was a great honor to be able to do both designs. Following the contest guidelines, she said she tried to depict a community united around urban agriculture. Although she has painted many murals before, this was Eccles first street mural. With the help of community volunteers, the murals were recently completed.
Eccles said to the Columbia Missourian earlier this summer, “street murals are exciting and represent a real progressive community giving people a reason to stop and pause.”
The funding for the mural came through a donation made by Pat Jones, wife of the late Edward “Ted” Jones of the Edward Jones investment company. The Jones’ were instrumental in funding the beginnings of the MKT and Katy trails in Missouri and Mrs. Jones is a great support of projects that get people outside and in nature. Voting for the winning pieces was available on PedNet’s website.
Make sure to stop by and see the artwork in person on Bike Boulevard.
