Smithton Middle School Bike Brigade
A group of Smithton Middle School students called the Bike Brigade have traveled to school on their bikes since the first day of class and hope to continue until the end of the school year. Led by Gina Overshiner, this group of 6-8 students at meets at Again St Park each weekday at 7:15am. After school, Bike Brigade members meet at the Smithton bike racks for the ride home from school. Round trip they ride about five miles and receive about 40 minutes of cardio exercise a day.
Parents and participants site many incentives for riding bikes to school. Since most middle schools do not offer recess, the Bike Brigade gives students a chance to exercise and have fun before and after school. Riding and walking to school also promotes independence and self-esteem as students don’t have to rely on parents to drive them to school activities. The students in the program have also become close friends since they started riding together.
All Bike Brigade participants are required to complete BikePro to learn safety rules, traffic laws and bike handling skills. “Knowing my 10 year-old and 13 year-old have been through the BikePro class give me the confidence to let them bike around town,” BikePro parent, Virginia M., said. “My oldest loves the independence of being able to bike to music lessons, the library, school and to the local ice cream shop!” Participants like the class too. "The BikePro class is fun," student Tomas H. said. "Right as you get tired you get snacks which is awesome! I also like the trainings."
Another BikePro class will be held on Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at all Columbia middle schools. The class costs $50 and students should bring a bicycle, helmet, water bottle, lunch and a snack to the session. Smithton students who complete the class are invited to join the Bike Brigade.
