WALKABLE COMMUNITIES WORKSHOP:
Creating Safe Routes to School

Date of Event: Friday, September 10th, 2004
10:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Columbia/Boone County Health Dept. (corner of West Blvd. & Worley)


Nationally-renowned walkability expert and physical activity promoter Mark Fenton will facilitate a Walkable Communities Workshop. The purpose of the workshop is to identify ways to make neighborhoods safer and more pleasant for walking and to create Safe Routes to School.

The event will take place at the new Columbia/Boone County Health Dept., one block from West Boulevard Elementary School. It will include a Walking Audit of the neighborhood surrounding the school and the Broadway Corridor, led by Mark Fenton.

Tentative agenda:

10:00 am: Welcome (Stephanie Browning, Director, Columbia/Boone Co. Health Dept.)
10:05 am: Opening Words (Mayor Darwin Hindman)
10:10 am: Group Visioning Exercise (led by Mark Fenton)
10:30 am: An Overview of Walkability (illustrated presentation by Mark Fenton)
11:25 am: Boxed Lunch
During lunch: The Broadway Corridor Plan and Interactive Mapping Tool (Mitch Skov, City of Columbia Planning Dept.)
12:00 pm: Walking Audit in West Blvd. Elementary School Neighborhoods (led and narrated by Mark Fenton)
12:50 pm: Mapping and Problem-Solving Exercise (entire group)
1:20 pm: Group Discussion and Next Steps
2:00 pm: Close

Registration:

Registration is free (including lunch) if you register by Friday, September 3, although space is limited. Late registration costs $5.
