International Walk to School Day set for October 8th

Join millions of kids, parents and teachers around the world by walking to school and drawing attention to the many benefits of walking: good health, a fun time, energy conservation, reduced congestion and air pollution.

Operation Share the Road

The Columbia Police Department has designated October as Operation Share the Road month.  

Throughout October officers will increase the enforcement of city and state statutes regarding the rights and responsibilities of bicyclists and drivers.  What are the police officers looking for?

Errand Bikes Can Save Your Business Time and Money

Local businesses can save some time, money and the environment by participating in the Errand Bike program. 

Errand Bikes are new, safe, ready-to-roll bikes that local businesses can use for employees to run errands or make deliveries.  The program is FREE of charge and is fully supported by PedNet Coalition staff members who will help set up the program at the workplace and provide bike education and training for employees.  Visit the new PedNet website to learn more about Errand Bikes.

Bike Parking Available at Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival 

Avoid traffic and parking hassles by riding your bike to the Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival. 

There are two designated bike parking locations to choose from:  6th Street across from Cyclextreme or the parking lot behind the Chamber of Commerce at Flat Branch Park.

PedNet Launches a New Website

Have you checked out the new PedNet website yet?

It's up and running and ready to get you biking, walking or wheeling in a whole new way.   Here's a quick tour:
  • In the "About Us" section, you can follow PedNet's history since its formation in 2000 and read about all of our wonderful community partners. 
  • "Active Living" is a practical guide to actually making that change to walking, biking, wheeling, or public transportation.  There are great tips on bike gear, how to combine errands and exercise, and using the bus system. 
  • What are the "Benefits" of an active lifestyle? Better health, saving money, and a cleaner environment are just a few.  Check out other reasons why active transportation is good for everyone.
  • The "Programs" section gives you up to date information on all of the ongoing PedNet projects. Learn about The Walking School Bus, Confident City Cycling, Errand Bikes and so much more.
  • "Advocacy" is an important part of the PedNet mission.  This section lets you know about the current campaigns and what you can do to help.
  • Find out what 's going on when you visit the "Newsroom".  Business and Commuter of the Month are there as well as the latest news, PedNet newsletters, and the Events Calendar.

Half-Marathon Challenges Columbians

The Wilson's Half-Marathon Challenge is returning to Columbia for its 5th annual run on October 5, 2008.  Presented by the Columbia TrackClub, the half-marathon is a 13.1 mile run and takes place at the University of Missouri's Peace Park.  The event highlights how active our community is and how accommodating our parks and greenways are to active lifestyles.  All proceeds will go to Central Missouri  Community Action, an important partner with PedNet in promoting  healthy lifestyle behaviors in underserved populations. The Mayor's Cup II Storms Columbia October 18th

Columbia's Urban Adventure Race hits the city again with all new locations, activities, challenges, and crazy fun.  A new chapter in Columbia history gets made on Saturday, October 18, 2008 9am Boone Tavern (811 E Walnut St)  and you don't want to miss out.  Registration is $40 for two-person teams until October 4th $50 for two-person teams after October 4th.  Kids under 12 are half off with an adult partner. Walking School Bus Kicks Off with Record Numbers

Over 400 Columbia Public School children have signed up to be a part of the 2008-2009 PedNet Walking School Bus program! 

A record number of participants at a record number of schools has coordinator Margie Tonnies pleased, "We had a great start and several leaders reported how much fun they had walking the kids to school," said Tonnies  "This week we have several new kids signing up as they have seen the "bus" walking down their neighborhood streets and want to get involved too."   For more information or to sign your child up visit the Walking School Bus section of the new PedNet

YouZeum Starlight Bike Ramble Attracts Record Crowd

YouZeum Executive Director Gwen Robbins reports that there were 543 registrants and over 100 volunteers- a new record! 

About 1/3 of those volunteers were from PedNet!  Robbins also stated that the total income in cash and in-kind support was $16,915. All proceeds will go toward furthering the mission of The YouZeum.

Aerobic Exercise For The Wheelchair-bound
ScienceDaily (Sep. 15, 2008) - University of Texas at Austin alumnus, Chris Stanford (MSEE '91), and Electrical & Computer Engineering undergraduates are working on making exercise fun for wheelchair users. For the last year, Stanford has been partnering with engineering seniors to test his idea for a virtual reality treadmill for the disabled.  Read more here.
