About 135 second-hand bicycles were given away at the Third Annual Cycle-Recycle on May 9th at the ARC. The bicycles had been donated by PedNet members and repaired by local bike enthusiasts led by Mike Bowman of Cycle-Extreme and Sarah Ashman of Walt's Bike Shop. A number of bikes had been repaired in advance at Tryathletics. The SAFEKIDS Coalition provided approximately 100 new helmets to children receiving bikes.
The event took place in conjunction with the formal Kick-Off of the Mayor's Challenge: Bike, Walk, and Wheel Week. After hearing from U.S. Representative Kenny Hulshof and Mayor Darwin Hindman, about 60 cyclists took part in a 4-mile urban bike ride, led by members of Columbia Police Dept. and the Columbia Bike Club.
