Wheels on the Bus: 2006 Winners

13th May, 2006

There were two winning entries in the inaugural Wheels on the Bus contest, submitted by Susan Pitt, and by Ellen and Ian Thomas.

Susan Pitt

Note: Susan’s trip began when she wheeled down to Flat Branch Park for the Kickoff for Bike, Walk & Wheel Week. She didn’t count it as part of her miles, but she spent a good two hours exploring the photo display and the skin cancer screening at the event, and visiting with the other participants. She was a little worried about getting her wheelchair up the hill and back to her apartment at Paquin Towers, but as her route log tells us, she made it. During the week, Susan racked up approximately 7.25 miles in her wheelchair and 85.7 miles on the bus, for a total of 92.95 miles.

5/6/06: From the Flat Branch Park I rode my chair back to Paquin, then to the store on Hitt Street and back to Paquin – 3 times.

5/7/06: From Paquin to convenience store on Hitt Street and back to Paquin.

5/8/06: From Paquin to store on Hitt and back to Paquin.

5/9/06: Wheeled from Paquin to Wabash Station, to the convenience store next to Wabash and back to Wabash. Got on the yellow bus to the Workshop (on Nifong). On yellow bus from work to Wabash, on brown bus to Matthew Street. Wheeled from Matthew to Paquin Towers.

5/10/06: From Paquin to Wabash, to store next to Wabash and back to station. Yellow bus to workshop. From workshop to Wabash on yellow bus, then wheeled from Wabash to Paquin. [Graphic at right is autograph of Joe Belanger, driver/supervisor for Columbia Transit.]
