Date of Events: 10th December, 2004; 28th January, 2005; 18th February, 2005
More than 200 local elementary school children participated in recent Walk-to-School Day events through PedNet's "Bike, Walk, and Wheel: A Way of life in Columbia" project.
On a cold, wet, and windy morning in December, 60 West Boulevard Elementary School kids, led by First Ward Councilwoman Almeta Crayton (pictured above left), walked from the ARC to school, a distance of about 0.7 miles. In late January, amid freezing temperatures, 119 students walked to Grant School. Three weeks later, more than 40 Russell Boulevard Elementary students met at the ARC and walked 1 mile to their school, led by principal Ed Schumacher (pictured below left).
All of these children enjoyed a healthy breakfast at school and a chance to win free passes to the ARC and Empire Roller Rink, as well as benefitting from the early morning exercise and helping to reduce traffic congestion around school.
