PEDNET VOLUNTEERS INSTALL MARKER POSTS FOR DOUGLASS NEIGHBORHOOD TRAIL

3rd December, 2005

It was a chilly Saturday in December, with the temperature around freezing and a threat of flurries.

Undeterred, seven stalwart PedNet staff, volunteers, and friends spent the morning installing ten wooden marker posts that will designate the Douglass Neighborhood Walking Trail. The one-mile trail follows a square loop on Ash St., Garth Ave., Worley St., and Providence Rd. The 6" by 6" posts, which are located every one-tenth of a mile intervalsaround the loop, will carry signs marked with "DNT" and the distance. The City of Columbia Public Works Dept. kindly donated the posts and signs.

The installation process consisting of drilling a 12"-diameter, 30"-deep hole, inserting the 8'-long post, and maintaining it an upright stance while backfilling the hole. Rocks, concrete, and clay caused drilling problems on no more than a few sites, and the biggest scare came when a severed root, which bore a striking resemblance to a telecommunications cable, was spotted.

Many thanks to crew: Robert Johnson, Ben Falby, Mark Foecking, Jim Linville, Sean Newcomer, Ian Thomas, and especially Richard Stone of Columbia Public Works.
