However, all that has changed since Ann had the opportunity to ask MODOT staff working at the intersection one morning, whether they could make the lights stay red for Stadium traffic longer. The workers' initial response was that she shouldn't be walking here. "It's too dangerous," they said! When Anne made it clear she intended to continue walking with the crew (her own kids Sarah, Samantha, and Kate; and neighbors Casey and Taylor Parker, and Emily Carr) she was put in touch with Jacob Ray, Senior Traffic Studies Engineer in Jefferson City.
According to Mr. Ray, the fact that pedestrians were using this intersection, combined with the fortuitous existence of some unassigned hardware, made it a compelling case for crosswalk lights. A few weeks later, the crosswalk lights with pedestrian pushbutton activation were installed both at College Park (above and below left) and at Rollins Road (below right), and crosswalk lines were painted on the road.
This is a good example of how Active Living programming can lead to physical improvements in the infrastructure.
