FRIDAY, MAY 11 Bike/Car Celebrity Challenge: 11:00 a.m. at the Alpine Shop, 1102 E. Broadway - It’s the automobile vs. pedal power! Celebrity contestants compete in a variety of errands around downtown Columbia. SATURDAY, MAY 12 Bike Walk & Wheel Week Kick Off Celebration: 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at Flat Branch Park, downtownRegistration: - T-Shirt Pickup (while supplies last), free bike safety checks and complimentary seat and handlebar fit adjustments courtesy of Columbia Bike Club Float Your Boat, A Children’s Nature Activity (1:30 to 2:30 p.m.): Make a boat out of Mother Nature’s finest including twigs, leaves and grasses and watch it float gently down Flat Branch Creek to the ocean. Kick Off Presentations (2:30 p.m.): Welcoming comments by Mayor Darwin Hindman and honorary chairs Simon Rose and Fred Parry. City of Columbia will present a Dedication Ceremony of the MKT Providence and Stewart Underpasses. Group Trail Ride & Walk on the Wild Side (3:00 p.m.): Stop on the bridges for Flat Branch Fun Facts provided by the City of Columbia Public Works. Learn about the history, ecology and nature facts of Flat Branch Creek: How clean is it? What creatures live in and around it? Do I live in this watershed? Confident City Cycling: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the MU Veterinary School - Course covers bicycle safety checks, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques. - Course provides adult cyclists the confidence needed to ride safely and legally in traffic. - $10 course fee, must pre-register by May 4, contact Robert Johnson SUNDAY, MAY 13 CycleRecycle: 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Columbia/Boone County Health Department, 1005 W. Worley- To donate a bike or volunteer to help repair bikes, email pednet@pednet.org - To receive a free, refurbished bike, register at 1:00 p.m. at the event; bike giveaway at 2:00 p.m. and skill stations at 2:30 p.m. - Free bike licensing available, courtesy of Columbia Fire Dept. - Free bike helmets, courtesy of Safe Kids Columbia. MONDAY, MAY 14 Skate Party: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Empire Roller Rink, 1305 Business Loop, 443-7375 - $1 discount for everyone wearing this year’s BWWW t-shirt. TUESDAY, MAY 15 Spring Health and Fitness Expo: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the ARC, 1701 W. Ash, 874-7700 - Free admission, promotional items, vendor services, and health and fitness information including commuting tips booth - Sponsored by the Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness & Health and members of Columbia’s health and fitness community WEDNESDAY, MAY 16 Keeping Kids Safe on Columbia Streets: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Daniel Boone Regional Library- Presented by Officer Jessie Haden Pitman of the Columbia Police Department - Designed to help parents sort through the myths and truths regarding dangers to their children - Common sense tips to help keep kids safe while walking or biking to and from school or just out having fun. Columbia Bicycle/Pedestrian Commission Meeting: 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Conference Room, Daniel Boone Building THURSDAY, MAY 17 PedNet Scavenger Hunt: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Grill One-5, 15 S. 6th St. - Teams register from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ($10 fee) - Bike, walk and wheel your way around downtown, solving clues and collecting treasures. - Contact: Ian Thomas, 445-2928 Basic Bicycle Maintenance and Commuting Tips Class: 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Walt’s Bicycle, Fitness & Wilderness Company, 886-9258- Learn to repair a flat, adjust your brakes and much more - Followed by a “how to" commuting class with tips on bicycle choice, cargo and clothing, lighting, local route selection, and foul weather riding. The Pednet Project, Open House: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Daniel Boone Building, 701 E. Broadway - Opportunity for citizens to learn about Columbia’s Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program - Committee members and city staff available to discuss infrastructure and programming plans - Contact Ted Curtis, 874-7649 FRIDAY, MAY 18 Bike, Walk & Wheel Day: Free Breakfast Stations from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., throughout Columbia - Ten free breakfast stations around town (see map) - Challenge your family, friends, co-workers and employees to travel “under your own steam” this morning- Three live radio broadcasts: KFRU's David Lile will at the Colosseum Bistr, KPLA's Chris Kellogg at the ARC, and BXR's Mo Louis and Liz Mozzocco at the MKT Trailhead at Stewart and Providence - "Early Bird" stations at the ARC and Colosseum Bistro open at 6:30 a.m. - Contact Ian Thomas, 445-2928 for information on walk to school events. SATURDAY, MAY 19 Columbia Bike Club Poker Ride: 9:00 a.m. Meet at Walt’s Bicycle Fitness and Wilderness Company Green Lawns/Blue Waters, A Show-Me Yards Field Day: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Call 874-7616 - Nine bikeable/walkable locations will be open for you to view innovative new yard care ideas that promote a healthy environment - Download a map of the event at www.gocolumbiamo.com Columbia Walking Club - Organized Walk: 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Stephens Lake Park main parking lot (off Old Hwy 63) - Details from the ARC at 874-7700 - After the walk, return for the start of the rally at 2:00 p.m. Bike, Walk & Wheel Week Final Rally: 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Stephens Lake Park, entrance off East Broadway - Free food, live music by Ironweed Bluegrass Band and numerous prize drawings.
