A LETTER FROM 2007 BIKE, WALK, AND WHEEL WEEK COORDINATOR, JANET GODON:Hello Everyone: On behalf of the 2007 Bike, Walk and Wheel Week Committee, I would like to invite you to join us for the 6th Annual Mayor’s Challenge: Bike, Walk and Wheel Week Committee, May 12 – 19th. As usual, we are encouraging Columbia residents to make a special effort to use active modes and reduce fossil fuels use, and the key to getting hooked on alternative transportation is just to try it once. Better yet, share the experience with family, friends or co-workers and learn how fun and easy it is to get around: participating in Bike, Walk and Wheel Week is just the ticket. Our schedule is “geared up” with opportunities at all levels from the first time cyclist to those of you who walk or bike to work on a daily basis. Join us on Friday, May 11 for an early start to the week with the Bike Car Celebrity Challenge, a fun event highlighting the ease of commuting by bike in downtown Columbia. Local media and other celebrities will be paired for a bike vs. automobile race to complete a variety of errands. Saturday, May 12th is our Kick Off Celebration at Flat Branch Park. After picking up your t-shirt join Mayor Hindman, Honorary Co-Chairs Fred Parry and Simon Rose, and other guests in putting the wheels in motion for a great week. We’ll have some fun activities for the kids and then please join us for a walk, ride, or roll along the MKT trail. If you’re without a bike or have one too many, check out Cycle Recycle on Sunday, May 13th. Not only are we giving away free recycled and repaired bikes but Safe Kids Columbia has donated 100 helmets to be given away to individuals in need. Along with the great events and activities of past years we have added a few new programs. On Thursday, May 17th attend the PedNet Project Open House to find out what the hype is all about regarding the City of Columbia’s $22 million Non-Motorized Transportation Pilot Program. Later that evening, wander over to Walt’s and learn how to give your bike the love it needs with the “Basic Bicycle Maintenance and Commuting Tips Class.” Walt's and PedNet Coalition staff will be on hand to cover questions regarding route selection, bicycle choice, cargo and foul weather riding gear. Bike, Walk and Wheel Day on Friday, May 18th is a great opportunity for you to see what it's like to kick the car habit, get a free breakfast out of the deal, and join over 2,500 residents making their way to school, work and play the alternative transportation way. Check out the Breakfast Stations Map. All good things must come to an end, and our Final Rally on Saturday, May 19 will conclude the week. Join us at this celebration for free food, live music by the Ironweed Bluegrass Band and numerous prize drawings. Check out the complete schedule of events. My short tenure as this year’s Bike, Walk and Wheel Coordinator has the wheels in my head spinning, hopefully in the right direction, with all there is to do. My helmet is off to the numerous volunteer committee members and sponsors that really make this event what it is. With our packed schedule, hopefully you’re motivated to participate in at least one activity during the week and will continue adding alternative transportation to your daily routine. Because once you try it you’ll never forget how much fun it is, or how easy it is - it’s just like riding a bike! Please email me or call me at 573.447.4775 for sponsorship information or to volunteer with the event.
Sincerely, |
A LETTER FROM HONORARY CHAIRS, SIMON ROSE AND FRED PARRY:Dear Fellow Citizens, If we can do it…YOU can do it!! As co-hosts of KFRU’s Morning Meeting, there are few things in this world on which we ever actually agree. However, the decision to serve as this year’s honorary co-chairs of Bike, Walk and Wheel Week was a no-brainer. As you might expect, we agreed to do it for totally different reasons. Simon uses his bicycle on a daily basis as his preferred mode of transportation. Fred uses his bike for exercise and for spending quality time with his family on Columbia’s extensive trail system. Whatever your reasons or motivations may be, Bike, Walk and Wheel Week is a great opportunity for you to improve your physical health and enjoy outdoor life in and around Columbia. It’s also the perfect time to start a new regimen that facilitates a healthier lifestyle while reducing our dependency on motorized vehicles. During the week of May 12-19, Fred will leave his gas-guzzling vehicle parked for a few days and finally use his “POWER” for a good cause. Don’t expect any major climate changes, but you can look forward to a more peaceful world in the KFRU studios that week. We encourage you to go to the Bike, Walk and Wheel Week website at www.pednet.org and take a look at the great events taking place all week. Many of you who take up the Bike, Walk and Wheel challenge might get hooked on an alternative way of getting around, some of you will enjoy the break from the vehicle and some of you will just feel better about yourself (and your co-workers) after a bit of exercise! We look forward to seeing you out and about for Bike, Walk and Wheel Week 2007. Cheers and World Peace,
Fred Parry and Simon Rose |
