POST-Certified Law Enforcement Training in Bicycle Issues
When law enforcement professionals understand traffic laws pertaining to cycling, the streets become safer for motorists and bicyclists alike.
Bicycle transportation has nearly
doubled in the past 15 years, leading
to more conflicts between motorists
and bicyclists. Give your officers the
information they need to resolve
these conflicts in a positive way
that protects the rights of both the
motorist and bicyclist and creates a
culture of safety and mutual respect.
'Rights and Duties: A Law
Enforcement Officer's Guide To
Bicycling Issues' is a two-hour POSTCertified
legal study course designed
to help officers:
- Correctly enforce traffic laws that pertain to bicyclists;
- Understand why experienced and inexperienced cyclists behave differently;
- Identify dangerous bicycling behavior and understand the need for law enforcement involvement.
NOTE: This course does not teach bicycle riding skills to law enforcement officers.
“It’s amazing the difference this class has made in Columbia. Our officers were very impressed with the training.”
–Detective Jeff Westbrook,
20-year veteran Columbia Police Department
In 2008, the PedNet Coalition partnered with Columbia Police Department to provide training in bicycle law for all 130 officers, leading to two new programs. ‘Operation Share the Road’ was a targeted enforcement of these laws on both bicyclists and motorists, and ‘Bike Bright, Wear a Light’ was an educational campaign in which cyclists riding without lights at night were warned but not ticketed, and were given a free light set.
