Effective Communication with Elected Leaders
Engaging Mayors and other elected officials on the issue of healthy community policy is the key to transformational change.
With their influence over public
policy and legislation, elected
representatives are critical partners
in any active living or healthy
community movement. When
grass-roots advocates engage
successfully with City Council and
School Board members, physical
and policy barriers to healthy
living can often be removed with
surprising ease.
Through presentations, workshops, and ongoing technical assistance from advocates and elected leaders you will learn how to:
- Comply with lobbying laws;
- Engage with candidates before they’re elected;
- Develop long-lasting relationships that can transform your community;
- Help policymakers help you.
“I was very impressed with PedNet’s strategic communications skills in building community and policymaker support for Columbia’s 25 mph neighborhood speed limit campaign.”
–Barbara Hoppe, Sixth Ward Councilperson, Columbia City Council
When Darwin Hindman was elected Mayor of Columbia in 1995, his agenda included parks, trails, bike lanes, and sidewalks. Since then, the PedNet Coalition has supported this agenda by educating the community on the benefits of walking and bicycling, and delivering political support for complete streets, safe routes to school, and active transportation funding. This effective partnership between community advocates and policymakers continues today.
