Bicycle Education Program Development
Creating a bicycle culture means that ordinary people view cycling as something ordinary people do. To achieve this requires a community-wide education program.
Cycling on the street is widely
regarded as something only crazy
people would do. “Ordinary people”
see cyclists run stop signs and red
lights, weave in and out of traffic, and
frequently end up in accidents. A
community education program that
teaches all cyclists how to ride safely
and legally can change that perception
and create real mode shift.
A workshop on developing a bicycle
education program will help you
empower your community to reap
the benefits of active transportation.
Learn how to:
- Host your own “LCI seminar;”
- Market the program effectively to new and existing cyclists;
- Set up a middle school Bike Brigade and change the habits of a generation;
- Reduce tension between cyclists and motorists.
“This course was very helpful in giving me
confidence riding in traffic. I now drive my husband crazy pointing out bicyclists riding in an unsafe way, placing themselves in dangerous
positions.”
–Margaret Rutheford, 2008 graduate, Columbia
Since 2005, about 500 adults and children have completed PedNet’s 8-hour courses, certified by the League of American Bicyclists. In that time, bicycling in Columbia has tripled and safe, legal cycling has become the norm. Almost 100% of graduates report feeling more confident after taking the course, and they are cycling more often — replacing 24% of their previous driving trips.
