“Walk to School Day” Special Events
Kids love a big “Walk-to- School Day” celebration. It's also a great way to engage parents, school officials, elected leaders, and the media!
Today’s children are more sedentary
than ever, leading to obesity, chronic
disease, underachievement, and
low self-esteem. An energizing
“Walk-to-School Day” event can be
the spark that starts to reverse this
trend - awakening kids to the joy of
unstructured physical activity, and
parents to the fact that walking to
school, very often, is perfectly safe.
During a single three-hour workshop,
you will develop a detailed timeline
and action plan that make it easy to:
- Engage the right school, community, and business partners;
- Promote the event at school, in the community, and to the local media;
- Evaluate safe walking routes.
Long-term consulting services include policy campaign strategy assistance for creating Safe Routes to School.
“Our PedNet partners organized the children and volunteers to help us put on our first few Walk-to-School Days. Now, we run the events ourselves.”
Beverly Borduin, Principal,Grant Elementary School, Columbia
The PedNet Coalition has organized hundreds of Walk-to-School Days at dozens of different schools, involving tens of thousands of schoolchildren. In Columbia, the community buy-in and partnerships developed through these popular events has led to a daily Walking School Bus program for more than 400 kids, foundation and federal funding for programs and infrastructure improvements, and significant policy shifts that are getting more kids walking to school.
