Walking: Ditch the Treadmill

Two women walkingWalking on a treadmill is a good way to get exercise, but there are so many benefits to be had when you choose active transportation instead:

  • You can get two things done at once. When you walk to the store, you get your shopping and your exercise done at the same time.
  • It is more challenging to the body. There are starts and stops to make, curbs to step up to, debris on the sidewalk to negotiate. And, you can't lean on those little bars when the going gets tough.
  • When you walk up and down hills you use different muscles. Two workouts at the same time!
  • It is relaxing to the eyes. No glare from artificial lights or television screens.
  • You leave no carbon footprint. No electricity is expended and no machine had to be manufactured.
  • It’s free and you can do it anytime, anywhere.

So save the treadmill for those bad weather days and get outside for a different walking experience.
