History of PedNet: 2002

March 4:

Columbia City Council approves plans to extend Forum Boulevard about half a mile south from Dunbar Drive to intersect with Old Plank Road, and to include a 10-foot wide pedway along the west side - one of the first pedways to be constructed in Columbia

April 10:

Columbia City Council holds its first work session regarding the CATSO 2025 Plan and the proposed new Model Street Design Standards for Columbia. Inclusion of specific design standards for sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and pedways on various types of streets (eg. residential, collector, arterial), gives the CATSO Plan its "teeth."

April 28 - May 5:

1st annual Bike Walk and Wheel Week logoMore than 750 residents take part in Columbia's First Annual Mayor's Challenge: Bike, Walk & Wheel Week, the brainchild of Mayor Hindman. The event includes a Kick-Off Bike Ride and Hike on the MKT Trail; Bike, Walk, and Wheel Day, when sponsored breakfast stations all over Columbia offer a free breakfast to everyone travelling by human power; and a closing event with prizes.  All participants receive a t-shirt with the new Bike, Walk & Wheel Week logo.

May 4:

The PedNet Coalition, in partnership with Centro Latino, holds the first Cycle-Recycle bike giveaway and community festival, at which 120 second-hand bikes are donated, repaired, and given away to local (mostly Mexican-American) families.

July 1:

The CATSO 2025 long-range transportation plan, including the PedNet Masterplan, is adopted unanimously by Columbia City Council. Dozens of PedNet members with diverse interests including health, education, and the environment, testify in favor of bicycle, pedestrian, and wheelchair facilities.

July 1:

At the same meeting, City Council creates a steering committee for the Broadway Corridor bicycle, pedestrian, and wheelchair plan, a key piece of the PedNet backbone. Mayor Darwin Hindman appoints PedNet Board members Chip Cooper, Christy Welliver, and Cyndy Jones, to serve on the 5-person committee.

August:

Chip Cooper and the PedNet Coalition receive the 2001 Community Service Award from Services for Independent Living (S.I.L.) for helping to make Columbia accessible to people with disabilities.  S.I.L. is a non-profit agency, whose mission is to empower people with disabilities to live as independently as possible, to control their own lives, and to increase opportunities and choices through direct services and community advocacy.

October:

Girl Scout Troop 488With funding from the Columbia Disabilities Commission, the PedNet Coalition and Girl Scout Troop 488 manufacture 650 safety armband reflectors for distribution to wheelchair users, pedestrians, and cyclists. Several schools request and receive some of the armbands to distribute to their students who walk to school.

November:

City of Columbia adopts the Greenbelt/Trail Network Masterplan which incorporates all PedNet Masterplan trails and establishes a priority for their development.
